Going through changes...

image

I think it was India Arie who said "change comes slowly or not at all" in one of her songs, not sure what song that is now, but I digress.
For us humans, change is the most frequent and common thing that happens to us, but it is also the hardest. Why? Because we never get used to it, we never want it to happen; especially if its change that overturns the cart and disrupts the delicate balance of our oh-so-tidy lives.
This morning as I lay on my bed, just taking in the sweetness of dawn, somethings occurred to me about change:

  1. It will happen whether we like it or not. Yes, I know that sometimes it seems unfair, abrupt, meaningless, painful, depressing, etc. But instead of focusing on the discomfort or pain of the change, commit yourself to the process and trust that the purpose for which that change is happening will not be lost on you. I’ll say that again without sounding preachy… ‘Change is FOR A PURPOSE… make sure you find it!’
  2. For Christians, I believe that change is God’s way of ensuring that we never get too relaxed in our comfort-zones. You may already be good, but can you get better? For those who have already hit rock-bottom, perhaps it’s time to make your way up?
  3. It forces you to STOP, RE-ASSESS and RE-STRATEGIZE if necessary. (Why is this sounding like a marketing plan? lol). Anyway, I’m sure you get my point. Some of us just keep moving, keep functioning like robots, just stashing everything in… until we self-implode and do ourselves more harm than good.
  4. It forces us to slow down and become more introspective - at least it does for me. It teaches us patience, forgiveness, persistence, courage, tenacity, faith and all those things we NEVER EVER learn galloping through life. Change comes when we need to put the brakes on and navigate the curves of life. (Is this sounding too New-Agey?)
  5. Finally (yes this is the end lol), change helps us become better versions of ourselves. I cast my mind back to every time there has been a major change in my life (and there have been a lot!); and how I have emerged better (hopefully), freer, more open, fluid, more-rounded, and also a lot more wiser. I would have preferred not to go through ANY of them, but I wonder if I would have become this person I am today. Our experiences in life should add more substance; not detract from us.
So to anyone going through changes, know that you do not walk alone. Know that change, no matter how difficult and painful, always yields good fruit.
As surely as the earth spins on its axis; change will happen. Don’t run away from it, embrace it… accept it!
A little something from Eminem about going through changes :) :
